Radical Empathy in FASD Caregiving: What I’ve Learned as a Mom

Judy Torralba is a long-time caregiver and parent-advocate with lived experience raising children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and other brain-based disabilities. As the founder of Hugs for FASD, she uses her voice to promote brain-first, empathy-centered support for families navigating misunderstood disabilities.

With over two decades of parenting experience, including foster care, adoption, and special education advocacy, Judy brings honesty, heart, and hard-earned wisdom to every conversation. Her work centers around radical empathy, non-judgement, and the belief that all people are worthy of support and understanding, no matter their needs, diagnoses, or histories.

You don’t want to miss this free, virtual workshop via Zoom!! Participants will be able to:

1. Describe the challenges caregivers face when parenting children with FASD within systems that lack an understanding of brain-based disabilities.
2. Identify the emotional, physical, and mental toll that caregiving can take, and explore strategies for realistic, sustainable self-care.
3. Understand how systemic stigma and judgement, including blame toward birth families, create barriers toward effective care and collaboration.
4. Reflect on the value of lived experience as a form of expertise and advocacy.

Audience

This event is designed to be a safe space for parents and caregivers. Birth parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, and their family members are welcome. Professionals- please register instead for the September 15th FASD training by Proof Alliance on our site.
