Intersection of Brain Injury & Opioid Misuse

  • Virtual Event
     June 12, 2025
     11:00 am - 3:30 pm

50% of those involved in substance use treatment have a history of brain injury, and this estimate is even higher among those who also have mental illness.

Those who survive opioid overdose can experience brain damage because of lack of oxygen to the brain. Individuals who misuse substances are also more susceptible to brain injuries caused by falls and violence; as well as, struggles with chronic pain, pre- and post-injury addiction, neurobehavioral challenges, medication mismanagement, and difficulty accessing effective treatment.

This free training via Zoom by the Brain Injury Assoc. of PA will:

  1. Raise awareness of the intersection of brain injury and substance misuse
  2. Provide basic brain anatomy and functioning and the impact of opioids on neurochemistry and brain structure
  3. Provide training to providers and professionals who work with individuals with substance abuse disorder and/or brain injury
  4. Explore screening tools, neurocognitive assessments and how to develop customized interventions for individuals with co-occurring diagnosis
  5. Offer assistance to providers who want to develop their ability to identify, treat, and/or refer individuals with both brain injury and substance abuse disorder
