Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Underdiagnosed & Preventable With Proper Support

Unlike drugs such as heroin, fentanyl, or cocaine, alcohol is a teratogen — a substance that interferes with normal fetal development and causes congenital disabilities. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects and disabilities that can occur in an individual with prenatal alcohol exposure. Conservative estimates are that 1% – 5% of U.S. first-graders have an FASD — 1 or 2 children in every classroom — yet few are diagnosed.

• The impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on attention, behavior, learning, language, memory & physical health
• Characteristics of the FASDs: from fetal alcohol syndrome to alcohol related birth defects
• Strategies on supporting individuals with FASD
• FASD resources you can utilize

Presenter

Carol Seifert, (she/her), RN, BSN, Proof Alliance Certified Trainer, has extensive experience in obstetrics. She spent the last 25 years of her career working in the Healthy Beginnings Program at Health Partners, Bloomington, MN, providing assessment, education, support, advocacy and care coordination for those experiencing a pregnancy complicated by substance use. She is now retired, but remains passionate about providing education on the risks of substance use and pregnancy.
