Vivitrol is an injectable, extended-release form of the medication naltrexone, which is approved to treat addiction to opioids such as heroin and prescription painkillers. Clients need to have gone through detoxification (withdrawal management) before starting the Vivitrol shot, which is effective at decreasing cravings.

Medications such as Vivitrol, when combined with counseling, provide a whole-patient approach to the treatment of opioid use disorder.
