The NIAAA 50th Anniversary Science Symposium

NIAAA’s broad research portfolio addresses important public health issues that affect the lives of almost every family and community across America:

  • how alcohol misuse affects individuals and society;
  • how underage drinking impacts brain development in adolescents;
  • why some people develop alcohol use disorder; and
  • how we can improve prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Today we know more about how alcohol affects the brain and body than ever before, thanks largely to the determined and uncompromising efforts of the talented researchers supported by NIAAA. As NIAAA reflects on 50 successful years of alcohol research, the Institute is poised to build on the progress that has been made to gain greater insights for the future.
